La Muralla Roja: A Colorful Postmodern Apartment Complex in Southern Spain

Are you a design enthusiast who loves to travel? If so, La Muralla Roja should be on your must-visit list! Built in 1973 by Ricardo Bofill, this stunning postmodern apartment complex sits beachfront in southern Spain and boasts an array of colorful courtyards, staircases, and bridges. In this blog post, we'll share our itinerary for visiting La Muralla Roja and give you tips on how to make the most of your trip.

Getting There

The closest airport to La Muralla Roja is in Alicante, Spain. From there, it's an easy one-hour drive to Calpe, where the apartments are located. To make your trip as seamless as possible, we recommend renting a car.

Booking Your Stay

To enter the apartment complex, you'll need to book accommodation through Airbnb or Booking.com. We highly recommend staying with Hans, whose apartment is located on the ground floor and in the red section of the building. The unit is clean, spacious, and offers stunning views of the complex. Click here to make a booking.

There are other apartments available to rent, so be sure to browse through the options and find what works best for your budget. And don't worry about parking – there's free onsite parking available for guests.

Staying at La Muralla Roja for one night is plenty of time. You will be able to capture photos and videos in different lighting conditions.

  • strong 3pm afternoon light

  • 6pm dusk evening light

  • soft 9am morning light.

The complex is massive and features multiple courtyards that are drenched in color and filled with bridges and stairways. You can find a fully blue, red, and pink courtyard, and the stairways lead to a rooftop pool that offers stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea.

The best part? We visited La Muralla Roja in March and there weren't many people around. We only saw a couple of groups taking photos, and the complex is so large that you hardly run into each other.

The town of Calpe is small and has a few shops and restaurants along the waterfront. When visiting in March it was a bit quiet but I’m sure it gets more popular in the summer months.

You can take a leisurely stroll from the apartment complex into the town via a path that extends on the hills of the beach, or if the tide is low you can walk on the beach itself.

If you're looking for a delicious dining experience, we highly recommend Semsa Beach Club, where you can savor fresh seafood and Mediterranean cuisine while enjoying panoramic views of the sea.

La Muralla Roja is an architectural masterpiece that is not to be missed on your next trip to Spain. With its striking geometric design and vibrant color scheme, this iconic red fortress in Calpe is a feast for the eyes and a must-see destination for architecture enthusiasts and travel lovers alike. Whether you're snapping photos for Instagram or simply soaking up the atmosphere, La Muralla Roja is sure to leave a lasting impression. So why not add it to your travel bucket list today and experience the magic for yourself?
